Complex ideas are easier to explain and understand if they are illustrated properly. Freeplane was created to serve this purpose. The application gives you the possibility of illustrating your thoughts and ideas in a mind map, without any effort. Despite its simple appearance, Freeplane provides you with everything you need to customize your mind maps and make them easy to understand. The application is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which means that it is free. What's more, you can install it on different platforms, like Mac OS X, Windows or various Linux distributions.

The user interface presents a wide range of options, around a large editing area. They allow you to perform basic tasks, like creating, saving or opening a project, changing fonts, expanding or collapsing a map's nodes, inserting icons and more. A central node is created by default when you start a new project. You may create child and sibling nodes, by selecting the appropriate options in the Edit menu or by pressing their corresponding keys. The application allows you to create as many nodes as you want, without any limitations.

Besides typing custom text on your nodes, you can insert a wide variety of icons as well. Many options, from the toolbar or top menus, can be accessed instantly, by right clicking a node. This is where you will notice the many possibilities that Freeplane places at your disposal. You may insert images, create links to web pages or local contents, set passwords, create and assign scripts and much more.

When it comes to exporting a mind map, Freeplane allows you to choose from a wide variety of formats. Once your project its complete, you can store it in a local folder, in JPG or other graphical formats, as an HTML or PDF document, in XML or XLS and many other formats.

Pros

Mind maps can be created quickly, without any effort. The application places many customization options at your disposal. Also, Freeplane allows you to save your mind maps in numerous formats.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to mention. While using Freeplane, any idea you have can be expressed in a comfortable and elegant fashion.
